Adding media

Your files stay on your machine until you decide otherwise.

Drop a file on the media bin and you can use it straight away. Scrub it, cut it, put it on the timeline. It has not been uploaded.

Editing starts straight away. Uploading is a separate choice you make later.

Local first, and we mean it#

Dropped files are saved on your own machine and registered with the project. The card in the bin shows Local only with a Sync button next to it.

Nothing uploads on its own. Ever. That is a deliberate choice. On a 4K shoot, the gap between "I can start cutting now" and "I can start cutting in forty minutes" is most of a morning, and plenty of footage never needs to reach a server at all.

Press Sync when a clip needs to exist somewhere other than this machine.

When you need to sync#

Sync a clip before:

  • someone you are working with can see it
  • skute runs a render on the server that uses it
  • you open the project on another machine

Everything else works fine on local files. Cutting, grading, playback and exporting from this browser do not need an upload.

Other ways to add media#

The Add media panel also gives you:

  • Stock. Search video, photo and audio, then import straight into the project.
  • From a link. Pull in a file by its address.
  • From another project. Reuse something you already have without uploading it again.

Footage that skute generates arrives in the bin like anything else.

A note on space#

Browser storage is limited and shared with every other site you use. If you are working with a lot of very large files, sync the ones you have finished with. That frees the local copy and keeps the clip usable.
